Hotspot Business
How to Start a Profitable WiFi Hotspot Business in Tanzania
Use this guide as a practical framework, then adapt each step to your network, customers and operating policies.
01
Pick a location with real foot traffic
Choose an area with consistent daily footfall — bus stands, markets, student hostels, or residential blocks without reliable home fibre. Survey how many people already carry smartphones and whether nearby hotspots are overpriced or unreliable before committing to a site.
02
License your bandwidth and register the business properly
Buy bandwidth from a licensed upstream provider, register your business with TCRA-compliant documentation, and keep customer registration records — this protects you legally and is often required before an upstream ISP will sell you a commercial link.
03
Start with simple packages, then automate collections
Launch with two or three voucher packages (e.g. 1 hour, 24 hours, 7 days) priced against what customers already pay for airtime bundles. Once sales are steady, move from cash-only vouchers to mobile money so a single person can run the whole operation.
